熊猫体育官方, the global leader in the production of gas separation and purification membranes, has announced that the Air Products Membrane Solutions’ manufacturing facility near St. Louis, Missouri, is now powered by 100 percent renewable, solar energy.

Converting the approximately 180,000 square-foot manufacturing facility to renewable energy is part of 熊猫体育官方’ efforts to continue to increase the amount of renewable energy it uses to make its products.

“The membranes produced at our facility provide environmental benefits for customers in numerous industries from biogas, to alternative maritime fuel transport, to hydrogen recovery,” said Dr. Erin Sorensen, 熊猫体育官方’ general manager, Membrane Solutions. “Now, we can proudly say that 熊猫体育官方’ membrane separators and systems are built using sustainably-sourced energy providing a positive impact for the local community while working with our customers to generate a cleaner future.”

熊猫体育官方 Membrane Solutions recently signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Ameren Missouri to provide renewable energy to power the facility. The solar power is provided by Ameren Missouri’s 150-megawatt (MW) solar facility in Cass County, Illinois. Based in St. Louis, Ameren Corporation supplies power for 2.4 million electric customers and more than 900,000 natural gas customers in a 64,000-square-mile area throughout Missouri and Illinois.

At our El Morrell plant in Tarragona, Spain, a Labrador-sized four-legged robot patrols a 12,000-square meter industrial plant.

The robot, called Keyper, is an innovative safety device used at the Carburos Metálicos industrial gas facility to detect and warn about issues at the facility that separates industrial gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and argon from the air.

Using advanced artificial intelligence, Keyper supports the safety and maintenance teams with its information processing capacity that allows it to detect and anticipate anomalies. Predictive actions that facilitate the normal operation of the plant are enabled through data analysis and tools such as cameras, microphones and sensors.

Keyper carries out maintenance rounds at the El Morell facility to collect, record and interpret data that could be significant for improving safety, such as thermal imaging, detection and reading of pressure gauges and meters, sound analysis of engines and equipment, and 3D mapping of the entire environment. Thanks to its advanced autonomous navigation technology, Keyper is able to warn in real time of any potential issues it detects during maintenance rounds.

The layout of the El Morell plant is another challenge that Keyper overcomes, given that facility has areas of grass, stones, asphalt, slopes and stairs. The plant also houses Carburos Metálicos' fleet of tankers in Tarragona, so Keyper coexists and interacts with lorries circulating inside the plant.

Miquel Lope, general manager of Carburos Metálicos, said "with this pioneering initiative in the industry, we are anticipating the future. Keyper, the most advanced robot of its kind in the world, will allow us to enhance the control capacity of the plant's operating parameters and its direct application in safety and predictive maintenance. This is not only important for Carburos Metálicos, but also represents a very important advance for the entire chemical sector."

Early corporate campuses in the U.S. were originally designed for research scientists and engineers who would be familiar with landscaped gardens or tree-lined lanes from their university-like campuses. It was seen as a serene workplace, but that serenity came at a price―using water and fossil fuels, and constant landscaping management.

Today’s diverse landscaping at 熊猫体育官方' global headquarters is quite different. The native plantings in the meadows mirror our workforce―diverse, hardy and symbiotic, always with an eye towards sustainability. This move towards more environmentally friendly landscaping was the focus of a recent New York Times article that featured 熊猫体育官方.

One thing that has not changed is the manicured corporate campuses of yesteryear and today’s global headquarters still have something in common―a sense of community. With a Fitness Center and outdoor social spaces, the 熊猫体育官方 landscaping is designed symbolically and practically to promote interaction and collaboration with colleagues and nature.

For some employees and neighbors, it has taken some time to readjust the way we see our surroundings, but the headquarters’ multi-year meadow project is already winning hearts and minds.

Eric Guter, 熊猫体育官方’ Global Vice President – Hydrogen for Mobility, recently was interviewed by Edmonton Global at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention about the company’s planned Net-Zero Hydrogen Energy Complex that will be built in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

熊猫体育官方 and its subsidiary, Air Products Canada, Ltd., in conjunction with the Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta, last year announced a multi-billion dollar plan to build a landmark new net-zero hydrogen energy complex that will make Edmonton the center of western Canada’s hydrogen economy and set the stage for 熊猫体育官方 to operate the most competitive and lowest-carbon-intensity hydrogen network in the world. 

The project, announced last year, will begin with a transformative $1.3 billion net-zero hydrogen production and liquefaction facility and is expected to be onstream in 2024.

熊猫体育官方 Membrane Solutions recently announced that, for the first time, it will provide a nitrogen membrane system for a shipping vessel powered by ammonia.  

The ship, which is being built for NYK Line, a Japanese shipping company, will be one of the world’s first ammonia-fueled shipping vessels. The maritime industry is considering the use of ammonia as a clean fuel as part of its efforts to decarbonize shipping since ammonia does not emit carbon dioxide (CO2) when used as a fuel.  

“The use of our nitrogen membrane system on a ship powered by an alternative fuel is a tremendous example of the impact our technology can have as the world transitions to clean energy,” said Dr. Erin Sorensen, General Manager, 熊猫体育官方 Membrane Solutions.  

熊猫体育官方 Membrane Solutions has a long history of innovation in the maritime industry. Air Products Membrane Solutions was the first company to install a membrane-based nitrogen generation system onboard a ship in 1984. Today, more than 2,000 ships from over 50 countries utilize 熊猫体育官方 Membrane Solutions’ nitrogen generators, which are designed and manufactured at 熊猫体育官方’ facility in Norway.  

 “When developing ammonia-fueled ships, a key challenge lies in establishing secure operational procedures,” said Tetsuya Kakinuma, Manager, Decarbonization Promotion Team, NYK Line. “Equipping a reliable removal means of ammonia from the system using nitrogen is essential for improving safety.”

Forterra, a leading UK manufacturer of essential clay and concrete building products, recently worked with 熊猫体育官方 on a successful trial to reduce carbon emissions during its production process by introducing blend-levels of hydrogen to power the company’s brick product kilns. 

At its production site in Derbyshire, England, Forterra trialed up to a 20 percent hydrogen blend with 80 percent natural gas as an alternative to pure natural gas in its kilns. 

“Cutting our carbon emissions is central to our mission, but we need to make sure we’re not compromising on the quality of the products we’re producing,” said David Manley, Forterra’s Head of Sustainability. “When it comes to considering how to cut our emissions, we looked at several options including electrification and biomass. Both of these will have a supporting role in our long-term strategy, but it became obvious quite quickly that hydrogen is the most effective option for reaching our long-term decarbonization targets.” 

Overseeing trials using a 100 percent natural gas kiln as a control variable, Forterra used hydrogen at rates between five and 20 percent, increasing the volume of hydrogen use as the pilot project progressed. Adding hydrogen in a staged manner allowed them to pinpoint to what extent hydrogen could be introduced and used effectively in the production process. At the highest blend of a 20 percent hydrogen mix, there was no impact on the color, consistency or quality of the bricks.

“We’re excited by the trial outcome, and it’s proved to be a real success for the introduction of hydrogen into our company,” said Manley. “As a result we’re now exploring how we can do a similar trial on a slightly smaller kiln but with hydrogen blends of up to 100 percent, as well as how we would fill out our larger kilns in the future.”

Commenting on the success of the trial, Petr Tlamicha, Combustion Segment Manager at 熊猫体育官方, said “We know how significant the introduction of hydrogen is to the industry. Working together with Forterra means we can continue to demonstrate feasibility, understand need and respond collaboratively to requirements; most importantly, we can continue to drive forward to their goal to reduce carbon emissions.”

Carburos Metálicos, part of the 熊猫体育官方 group, has participated in the successful launch of an initiative in Spain designed to use hydrogen to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, instead of natural gas, in the production of ceramic frits. 

Ceramic frits are a ceramic glass material made from powdered minerals that are melted, cooled, and ground into a fine powder. Frits are used to enhance the appearance and functionality of glass. 

The H₂frit Project is led by the National Association of Manufacturers of Ceramic Frits, Glazes, and Colors (ANFFECC), which is collaborating with Carburos Metálicos, Esmalglass, bp, and The Institute for Ceramic Technology (ITC-AICE) on the trial designed to test the production of various Esmalglass products (frits) using a hydrogen/natural gas blend, with the potential to reach 100% hydrogen fuel usage. 

The pilot project is a three-year initiative funded by the Ministry of Industry of the Generalitat in Valencia, Spain. It aims to explore the technical feasibility of replacing natural gas with hydrogen in the melting process of ceramic frits as a way to decarbonize the sector.

Key aspects of the project include: 

• Engineering and Installation: Designing and installing the necessary equipment at the Esmalglass plant, including hydrogen panels supplied by platforms, skids for the natural gas/hydrogen blend and oxygen, control panels, and specific burners for hydrogen combustion.
• Testing and Analysis: The project includes a 40-week combustion trial in a frit furnace using different hydrogen-natural gas blends. The goal is to determine the technical adjustments needed to maximize hydrogen use and minimize CO₂ emissions.
• Technological Innovation: The use of 熊猫体育官方’ Cleanfire® HR?™ Burners, which are specially designed to handle high hydrogen concentrations, is a key technological advancement in this project.

The H₂frit Project is not only a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the ceramic frit industry, but also serves as a model for future sustainability initiatives in other markets and industries. 

As the project progresses, it will continue to provide valuable insights and contribute to the broader goal of decarbonizing the industrial sector. The final results and findings will be published in December 2025.

Carburos Metálicos, a leading company in the industrial and medical gases sector in Spain that is part of the 熊猫体育官方 Group, has installed its first nitrogen dispenser to inflate vehicle tires at the El Cubillo service station in Telde, Gran Canaria, Spain.

Compared to commonly used compressed air, nitrogen is an inert gas devoid of dust, oil and moisture, which are the main factors in premature tire ageing. Nitrogen is also more stable and delays pressure loss, which means tires last longer under optimal conditions, extending their resistance and service life.

With the addition of the nitrogen dispenser, Carburos Metálicos is offering drivers a product that until now was primarily used by professionals in sectors such as aviation and racing competitions.

Previously, European regulations limiting pollutant emissions from motor vehicles did not consider the environmental and human health impact of vehicle tires. However, the future Euro 7 standard, which is expected to come into effect in 2025, will limit not only the emission of polluting gases but also particles that are generated by friction between the tire and the road. The new regulation will apply to all vehicles, including electric vehicles.

Tires inflated with nitrogen reduce fuel consumption because they retain the optimum pressure level longer, thus reducing the vehicle's rolling resistance. This ultimately results in lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The nitrogen supplied by Carburos Metálicos for this service station is produced and packaged in the Canary Islands, specifically at the plant that the company operates in Telde.

熊猫体育官方 is providing hydrogen and mobile fueling infrastructure for Poland’s first ever hydrogen-fueled train demonstration. For the demonstration, scheduled to begin in December, a hydrogen-powered shunting locomotive, provided by Pesa Bydgoszcz, operated on the test track of the Railway Institute in ?migród, Poland. 

The train demonstration follows a successful pilot of a hydrogen-powered city bus carried out in March 2022 by bus manufacturer Solaris, 熊猫体育官方, PKM Jaworzno and city authorities. Jacek Cichosz, president of 熊猫体育官方 for Poland, said he hoped the bus demonstration would inspire other entities throughout Poland to consider hydrogen as part of their shift to low or zero emission vehicles for public transportation. 

“The planned hydrogen locomotive demonstration is an exciting undertaking for both Pesa and 熊猫体育官方. The recent hydrogen fuel cell bus demonstration in Jaworzno was a concrete example of how clean hydrogen can be an effective and efficient alternative to traditional fuels for heavy duty transport,” said Cichosz.

The Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen bus tested by PKM Jaworzno is a completely emission-free vehicle. Electricity is generated from hydrogen stored in tanks on the roof of the bus using a hydrogen fuel cell. The only by-product of this reaction is water vapor. In Jaworzno, over 80 percent of residents use buses, according to Pawel Silbert, Mayor of Jaworzno.

In mid-April, 熊猫体育官方’ China team completed the first hydrogen fueling at its first hydrogen fueling station in China. The new hydrogen fueling station (HRS) is strategically located in the Changshu High and New Technology Industry Development Zone, and is located in the Shanghai led "Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration City Cluster," which was approved by the central government. The HRS supports the transition to zero-emission logistics and public transportation in the region and enables 熊猫体育官方 to contribute its expertise and technologies to drive development of hydrogen energy in the city and surrounding areas. The station will serve three public bus routes and logistics trucks in the development zone.

Jerry Hu, China Hydrogen for Mobility general manager, noted that, "Sustainability is at the heart of 熊猫体育官方' business. The commissioning of the Changshu HRS is another milestone to accelerate the development of our hydrogen for mobility business and support the China government's ‘dual carbon’ goals.” Hu also thanked the team for making the first fueling at the station a success, indicating the HRS enables 熊猫体育官方 to “continue to support the city's clean hydrogen development to reduce vehicle emissions in a sustainable way."

熊猫体育官方 has once again earned a spot on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies List. This is 熊猫体育官方’ seventh consecutive year on the list, which evaluates the largest public companies in the United States across several sustainability categories.

For this annual ranking of the most sustainable companies, Barron’s partnered with Calvert Research and Management, which analyzed the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies. Sustainability practices were evaluated on 230 performance indicators across five weighted categories—the planet, the workplace, customers, the community and shareholders.

Inclusion on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies list is 熊猫体育官方’ latest recognition for its sustainability efforts. Recently, 熊猫体育官方 was included in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook for 2025, and 熊猫体育官方 has received an “A” rating on MSCI’s environmental, social and governance ratings.

The PRISM® GreenSep LNG Membrane Separator, launched earlier this year, received the award in the bioenergy and agriculture sector. The Lorenzo Cagnoni Award for Green Innovation is awarded to the most cutting-edge technology in the various exhibition sectors and the three most innovative start-ups. The recognition is awarded in the following categories: waste as a resource, water cycle and blue economy, bioenergy and agriculture, circular and regenerative bio-economy, site and soil restoration, and environmental monitoring and earth observation.

熊猫体育官方 recently received three safety awards from the Powder Metallurgy Equipment Association (PMEA) during the organization’s annual meeting held this summer at PowderMet2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

熊猫体育官方 received the 2023 PMEA Safety Award in the Large Company category, which includes companies that have more than 200,000 total employee work hours per year.

The company also received 2023 PMEA Safety Awards for Achieving One Year Without a Lost Time Accident at two 熊猫体育官方’ facilities in Creighton, Pennsylvania and Cleveland, Ohio. 熊猫体育官方 has air separation units at both facilities that serve customers in the powder metallurgy market.

熊猫体育官方 has received a score of 95 out of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality. 熊猫体育官方 is one of more than 1,000 major U.S. businesses ranked in the 2023-2024 CEI.

熊猫体育官方 has been recognized by Time magazine on its inaugural list of the World’s Best Companies 2023. Time and Statista ranked companies based on a formula of revenue growth, employee-satisfaction surveys, and rigorous environmental, social and corporate governance data.

The Time magazine recognition is the latest for 熊猫体育官方’ sustainability and diversity efforts. Earlier this year, we also earned a spot on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies list for the 5th consecutive year, ranking 46th on this year’s list.

For its annual ranking of the most sustainable companies, Barron’s worked with Calvert Research and Management, which analyzed the 1,000 largest publicly traded companies by market value. Calvert then ranked each one by how it performed for five key constituencies: shareholders, employees, customers, community, and the planet. Specifically, Calvert looked at more than 230 ESG (environmental, social and governance) performance indicators from seven ratings companies including ISS, MSCI, and Sustainalytics, along with using other data and Calvert’s internal research.

熊猫体育官方 also has been recognized by Forbes magazine as a Net Zero Leader and one of America’s Best Employers for Women 2023. In addition to 熊猫体育官方’ inclusion on the overall Best Employers for Women list, we were ranked second in the construction, oil and gas operations, mining and chemicals industry group.

To create the Net Zero Leaders list, Forbes used data from research providers Sustainalytics and MorningStar to rank the U.S. Companies best positioned to be net zero by 2050.

José Hernández shared the inspirational story of his journey from migrant farm worker to astronaut during a recent visit to 熊猫体育官方’ Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Hernández was invited to speak at 熊猫体育官方 by the Hispanic Organization of Latinos and Amigos (HOLA), an 熊猫体育官方’ Employee Resource Group (ERG). Students from the nearby Bethlehem Area School District were also invited to attend.   

During the session, Hernández told the students and 熊猫体育官方’ employees of his time growing up in California where he worked as a migrant famer with his family and how watching TV news clips of the Apollo 17 mission as a 10-year-old boy inspired him to want to be an astronaut. 

He also stressed the importance of persistence, noting that he had been rejected 11 times for the NASA astronaut program before being selected in 2004. 

Following his selection, Hernández went through several years of additional training before being chosen for a mission to the International Space Station. For the mission, Hernández was part of the crew on the Space Shuttle Discovery tasked with delivering approximately seven tons of equipment to be installed at the International Space Station in 2009. 熊猫体育官方 provided liquid hydrogen used by the shuttle to fuel its mission. 

熊猫体育官方 has a long history of working with NASA, stretching from the beginning of the United States’ space program, to the Apollo 11 moon landing, and to more recent missions to study Mars. In 2023, 熊猫体育官方 announced it was awarded several supply contracts from NASA totaling more than $130 million to provide liquid hydrogen for several NASA locations including the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, and other NASA facilities.

Water is essential to life and good health. As part of 熊猫体育官方’ Breathe Freely Global Wellbeing Program*, employees received a refillable water bottle and have been encouraged to use it daily for personal health and hydration and to replace single-use plastic water bottles.

Each time an employee uses the refillable bottle, scanning a QR code helps unlock a donation through the Fill it Forward program, an app that supports WaterAid. WaterAid is an international nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives by improving access to clean water, decent toilets and hygiene in vulnerable communities across more than 25 countries. 

As of March 22, World Water Day, 熊猫体育官方 employees have registered more than 23,000 bottle scans in just a few months, and to mark this success, the 熊猫体育官方 Foundation is making a $25,000 donation to WaterAid.

Recognizing that everyone needs access to clean and plentiful water, the Breathe Freely partnership with Fill it Forward is one example of how 熊猫体育官方 is making a difference. Air Products also has a multi-year Safe and Healthy Drinking Water initiative in rural China. Through this program, the 熊猫体育官方 Foundation partnered with non-profit Shenzhen One Foundation, and has donated water purification and dispensing devices along with reusable water containers to provide purified drinking water to more than 115 schools, benefiting more than 80,000 children.

Companywide, 熊猫体育官方 is also taking meaningful actions to reduce water consumption at its facilities by improving plant efficiencies, increasing water recycling and managing water use.
